Son of a gun
来这里的朋友不管英语水平如何，son of a bitch这句脏话一定熟悉吧？虽说美国比较注重言论自由，但传媒的控制尺度还是很紧的，bitch在很多情况下就不可以使用。这个时候son of a gun就有用武之地了。
简单地说，son of a gun就是son of a bitch的委婉用语，一样起骂人的作用，但前者不算脏话。这和用freakin’/friggin’代替F-word是一样的道理。举个例子：
That son of a gun badmouths me all the freakin’ time. He should burn in hell! （那个杂种一天到晚说我坏话。不得好死！）
当然，son of a gun还有很多其他的用法，最常见的包括：1）对某人的亲昵称呼，2）描述困难、麻烦、讨厌的事，3）在意外、失望、惊讶时发出的感叹。我摘录一下网友Ken G的解释：
… it is often also used – as my father used it – as a term of affectionate regard, as in “Why you little son of a gun!”
In addition to describing, as it originally did, a rogue, scoundrel, scamp, scalawag, it is also used to describe a difficult or odious task or other matter as in “Finding that leak in the system was a son of a gun.”
It is also an interjection used as an exclamation of surprise, disappointment, or dismay as in plain old “Son of a gun!”
概括得很精准。其中第一种用法和前面提到的骂人意思看似完全矛盾，不过这种情况在英语里不少见，比如bad除了“坏”之外，还表示“好，棒，有型，有性格”，也是看似完全矛盾。语言嘛，有时没什么道理可讲的。 
这三种用法我再各举一个例子：
Safin won the Australian Open! That son of a gun, finally!!! （萨芬赢了澳网！这个家伙，终于让我等到这一天了！！！） * Yes, I’m talking about myself. LOL*
This paper is a real son of a gun. It’s due tomorrow morning, and I still haven’t finished the first paragraph. I want to scream! （这篇论文实在太讨厌了。明天早上就要交了，可我连第一段都没挤出来。我想尖叫！）
A: I just heard that our Dean died in a car accident. （我刚听说教导主任撞车身亡。）
B: Son of a gun! （什么？！）
