Chinglish

The Top Ten Words of 2005:
1. Refugee: Though the word was considered politically incorrect in the US, ‘refugees’ were often considered the lucky ones in streaming away from a series of global catastrophes unmatched in recent memory.
2. Tsunami: From the Japanese tsu nami for ‘harbor wave’, few recognized the word before disaster struck on Christmas Day, 2004, but the word subsequently flooded with unprecedented (and sustained) media coverage.
3. Poppa/Papa/Pope: (Italian, Portuguese, English, many others). The death of beloved Pope John Paul II kept the words on the lips of the faithful around the world.
4. Chinglish: The new second language of China from the Chinglish formation: CHINese + EnGLISH.
5. H5N1: A looming global pandemic that could dwarf the Bubonic Plague of the Middle Ages (and AIDS) boggles the comtemporary imagination.
6. Recaille: A quick trip around the Romance languages (French jargon, scum; Spanish, rabble or swine; Italian, worthless dregs) illustrates the full freight of the word used to describe youthful French rioters of North African and Muslim descent.
7. Katrina: Name will become synonymous with natural forces responsible for the total and utter descruction of a city.
8. Wiki: Internet buzzword (from the Hawai’ian wiki wiki for ‘quick, quick’) that describes collaboration software where anyone can contribute to the on-going effort.
9. SMS: Short Message Service. The world’s youth sent over a trillion text messages in 2005. Currently being texted are full-length novels, news, private messages and everything in between.
10. Insurgent: Politically neutral term used to describe enemy combatants.
Chinglish居然仅次于refugee、tsunami和Pope。难道中式英语的问题在2005年已经引起全世界的关注？超过了Katrina台风？这也忒丢人了吧？
来说几个我印象最深的错误，大家千万别再犯了。
第一，welcome to do something。这个大概是被老外嘲笑最多的“经典”。别的不说，就博客圈好了，不知道多少人在自己的首页上写着：Welcome to visit my blog! 错错错错错！！！
应该怎么说？很简单：Welcome to my blog.（它是“I welcome you to my blog.”的缩略，to在这里是介词，不是动词不定式to do的to。）
再比如公交车上十有八九可以听到的：Welcome to ride with us (again)!
应该说：Thank you for riding with us (and we would be pleased to have you back in the future)!
大原则：避免用welcome to do something表示“欢迎做某事”。You’re welcome to stay here as long as you like是一句通顺的句子，但这里的welcome表示“可以随意”，不是“欢迎”。
第二，I think + 否定。比如：I think she won’t come. （我想她不会来了。） 正确的说法是：I don’t think she will come. （我不认为她会来了。）
英语里的习惯表达方式就是“I don’t think + 肯定”，而非“I think + 否定”，没什么理由可讲。所以大家要做的就是去习惯它，而不是继续沿着中文的思维使用Chinglish。
第三，How to do something?
这应该是相对而言最让我抓狂的Chinglish。一句正常的话要有主谓宾，to do something只是个动词不定式，不构成谓语，所以“How to do something?”根本不成立！给几个对比：
Chinglish: How to say it in English?
English: How do you say it in English?
Chinglish: How to prepare for GRE?
English: How do I prepare for GRE?
Chinglish: How to tell he’s lying?
English: How do you/I tell he’s lying?
当然，母语者也会用“How to do something?”这样的句子，但那只是为了达到某一效果（比如打破正常的节奏、增强冲击力）偶尔为之，绝对不像广大Chinglish使用者一样把它当作真理对待。另外，“How to do something”也常用来当标题（因为标题不用成句），但不加问号。

为什么Refugee 存在政治错误的问题？

Politically incorrect不是“政治错误”。你可以去google一下它的意思。

Double check一下那个Recaille吧，我只听过Racaille，虽然也有可能是我看新闻太少……

原本的法语单词是racaille，我不知道为什么转到英语成了recaille。可能是误拼吧。

PS：Yan，求你个事情，现在说美国的许多大学都承认雅思成绩了，我就想知道这个接受是怎么个意思？我想去那里读研，有了雅思7分是不用考GRE了吗？还是雅思的接受只是个幌子？

啊，这个我真不清楚啊，以前是必须要GRE的（除了特殊专业），现在可能变了吧。我的例句只是打个比方而已，不用想得太复杂。

同学们都不用谦虚了，这已经是相对高级的错误了。
多少在英美生活多年的中国屁挨着地从来就讲不出一句长于5个单词而完整无误的英语。
最后那条要是难改，相对容易的办法是在前面加上 Do you know / Could you tell me / …

其实我觉得这个 top ten 结果反映了中国经济飞速增长，中国影响力日益提高的现实。
在国内搞 IT 的同学说他们写的英文文档根本就惨不忍睹，可是外国合作方从来不提意见，只是背地里再偷偷找英语母语的人士把 Chinglish 再翻译成 English。

最让我抓狂的应该是 fans。大概六七年之前第一次在《搏》杂志上看到，尽管一个句子里中英混杂已经相当讨厌，但当时好像还有至少一半人自觉使用它的单数，现在…

Politically incorrect，“政治错误”的讲法确有失偏颇，但是几乎所有中文网站统统沿用这样的说法。
那能不能讲成 “原则性错误”？
站在一个非文字工作者立场来看，某些中国式英语对英语语言本身如果能造成积极的影响，适当地改变又有何不可？ 就像“How to do？”日常交流，感觉十分很顺口，意思也到，无伤大雅，为什么就不能变通？ 只是写作时应当尽量避免。

“原则性错误”意思差得比较远，不行。
其实politically correct是一个不太适宜翻成中文的概念。我通常就用PC。中文里不也有OK吗？
“How to do?”顺不顺口，这个比较主观。我觉得它一点也不顺，怎么听怎么别扭。至于“有没有积极的影响”，native speakers有发言权啊。“Long time no see!”得到了承认，“How to do？”没有，说明一定问题吧？

嗯，how to do确实是个很普遍的问题。我经常询问Redmond的同事的时候都是这样用的，他们肯定也明白，只不过就是看着不舒服罢了。就像我们听着有的老外说的中文也明白，但是总觉得有些不自在一样。

我可能是一个影响很坏的中国英语的传播者, 我有两个技术方面的英文blogs, 每天有不少人访问。写的时候也是反复揣摩，可总有不少句子感觉比较别扭，只好将就了。

學英語這麼多年，其實你講的都懂，只是看的愈多，就忘了原有的原則，罪過罪過。
想插話說說 politically correct/incorrect。要翻譯，譯成「政治正確/不正確」應該會普遍被華人明白吧。
是的，有些字詞確實是不好翻譯，由於文化上的差異，有時硬翻成比較歐化的中文；個人覺得這沒關係，因為大家都懂那是源於西方的，要知道本意的讀者下點功夫找找看就是了。

翻成“政治錯誤”在大陸可能會產生歧義的，萬一理解成“持反動觀點”什麼的就不好了。

对了，Chinglish和pidgin有什么区别么?

Chinglish一定是中式，pidgin则不一定。在使用中文以外的语言时夹杂不地道英语的用法属于pidgin但不属于Chinglish。
