今天无意间看到French leave这个短语，就顺手翻了一下词典。牛津的解释：

Will & Grace即将于5月18日走到尽头。心情很复杂。一方面，它曾经带给我那么多快乐，真的舍不得。另一方面，它的确已经过了高峰期，甚至一度让人觉得“惨不忍睹”，是时候结束了。

前段时间断断续续看完了TVB的剧集識法代言人。片子很一般，不过我倒是记住了里面提到的Murphy’s Law，也就是墨菲法则。这个法则的大致意思就是：In a given situation, if anything can possibly go wrong, it will go wrong. （任何可能出错的事必将出错。）
我这人运气向来不怎么样，是“只要可能出错，就一定出错”的最佳代言人。“哈，还好没发生，居然给我逃过去了”的好事在我身上发生的概率接近于零。我还在想，为什么“侥幸”总跟我无缘，搞了半天是Murphy’s Law盯上我了。
说来也巧，刚记住Murphy’s Law，我就在一个英文blog里看到了Murphy willing这个短语。通过上下文，我非常肯定作者的意思就是God willing。
God willing是“如上帝许可，如果不出意外”的意思，在希望事情能按计划顺利进行的时候说，是比较口语化的表达方式。比如：I’ll graduate next month, God willing. （如果一切顺利，我下个月就可以毕业了。）
直觉告诉我，Murphy willing应该是Murphy’s Law和God willing的结合体。于是搜索了一番，果然在Word Spy找到了答案：

上一篇的内容比较难以启齿，所以全部使用英文。发表评论的朋友也都很配合地避开了中文。这种“遮遮掩掩”状不禁让我想起一个短语：the birds and the bees。
不要被字面意思迷惑啊，我要说的不是鸟儿和蜜蜂，而是性教育。摘录一下英文的定义：
A euphemism for sex education, especially when taught informally. For example, It’s time Father told the children about the birds and the bees.
性教育为啥扯到鸟儿和蜜蜂的头上？其实说穿了就是因为“遮遮掩掩”。据说介绍性方面的知识比较尴尬，有些老师或家长就拿鸟儿和蜜蜂“做那事儿”来举例，从而避免赤裸裸地解释人如何性交。
The birds and the bees最初应该起源于1928年Cole Porter的畅销曲Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)。歌里是这么唱的：
And that’s why birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let’s do it, let’s fall in […]
美国副总统Dick Cheney开枪误伤一位律师朋友的事想必大家都已经知道。我原来以为它热闹个两三天就会淡下去的，没想到过了十多天，世界各地（尤其是美国本土）的媒体还在津津乐道，热情似乎丝毫没有减退的迹象，真是应了那句老话：好事不出门，坏事传千里。不过说起来这位副总统也真够倒霉的，上一次媒体对他表现出如此高的热情，是因为他在不恰当的场合说了一句“Go fuck yourself!”。惹来一身臊不止，他还成了茶余饭后的笑料。
这次的误伤事件，我的感受可以用一句话来概括：The media is (are) having a field day with this! *Media是medium的复数，严格按语法规则的话，后面应该接are；不过在非学术的场合，几乎所有人都把media当成单数来使用（类似于data），所以后面接is不算错。
来看看field day的定义：Informal A time of great pleasure, activity, or opportunity.
也就是说，如果某人对某事表现出极大的热情、将其逮住大作文章，那就是someone is having a field day with something。Someone绝大多数情况下是媒体，而something十有八九是糗事。词典里给的例句也清楚地证明了这一点：
